AHMC hosts BOCES-sponsored Camp Med 2013

Alice Hyde Medical Center hosted 11 Camp Med participants during the week of July 22 – 26, 2013.  Camp Med is sponsored by the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES, and is open to incoming 8th and 9th graders who have an interest in healthcare.    The application process involves a paragraph written by the applicant explaining why he should be chosen as a Camp participant, highlighting interest in exploring healthcare options or interest in a specific healthcare field.

Campers enjoyed a week-long program consisting of departmental tours, science/medical based hands-on activities, and a variety of learning opportunities provided by guest speakers.  The program concluded with CPR instruction, a mock “Code Blue” in the Emergency Room and the opportunity to prepare a first aid kit for home use.  Campers also had the opportunity to tour the inside of a Fletcher Allen Coordinated Transport ambulance.  The Fletcher Allen team enlightened the participants regarding transport of patients to a higher level of care at Fletcher Allen Medical Center.

Participants were encouraged to expand upon their new knowledge gained by job shadowing in areas of interest.  The job-shadowing experience allows students to spend time in specific departments to gain a full understanding of certain job functions in healthcare.   The goal of Camp Med is to promote early interest and recruitment efforts for the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
