They came to celebrate life. And celebrate they did—shaking hands, smiling and greeting one another like war veterans at a reunion. Their war, though, is against cancer. They're survivors...READ MORE
More than 150 people came to the 12th annual cancer survivors picnic held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on June 11th at the Medical Center. They gathered for lunch under a colorful tent pitched not far from the Reddy Cancer Treatment Center.
The center offers chemo-therapy now, so more people can be treated locally.
Among the survivors was Ken Bombard and his wife Shirley.
"I'm a 16-year survivor," he said, looking around at the croud.
The free event was part of National Cancer Survivors Day. Along with food and friendship, there were drawings for prozes donated by local businesses: golf packages from Malone Golf Club and Highland Green, a picnic table from Smith Lumber in Fort Covington, a handcrafted quilt from Leonna Russell of Moira, an oil change from Lerouz Oil, and gift certificates from Stewart's, Chez Madeleine and Nu-way Carwash. Enchanted Forest also provided two free tickets.
Plants and packets of flower seeds —symbols of life—were offered to the survivors and their families.
The NCSD Foundation defines a cancer survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer—from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. The Foundation reports that an estimated 12 million Americans are cancer survivors.
